Description
The 1928A1 Thompson, often referred to as the “Tommy Gun,” is one of the most iconic submachine guns of the 20th century. Originally developed by General John T. Thompson in the aftermath of World War I, the Thompson submachine gun became synonymous with both law enforcement and organized crime during the Prohibition era in the United States. The 1928A1 variant was designed for military use and became widely known for its role in World War II. The Lend-Lease ribbed barrel version of the 1928A1 was particularly distinctive due to its barrel design, which included ribbing to aid in cooling during sustained fire. The ribbed barrel, combined with the iconic Cutts compensator, helped reduce muzzle climb, making the weapon more controllable during automatic fire. The 1928A1 was a preferred weapon among Allied forces due to its reliability, rugged construction, and powerful .45 ACP cartridge, which provided substantial stopping power in close-quarters combat. The Thompson’s reputation for durability and effectiveness ensured its widespread use throughout the war and in the years that followed.
