Description
The 1928A1 Thompson, widely recognized as the “Tommy Gun,” is a legendary submachine gun that played a significant role in both law enforcement and military history. Initially developed by General John T. Thompson after World War I, this firearm became infamous during the Prohibition era and was later adopted by Allied forces during World War II. The 1928A1 was known for its reliability, robust construction, and effective use of the .45 ACP cartridge, making it a formidable weapon in close-quarters combat.
The Lend-Lease smooth barrel version of the 1928A1 was one of the variants supplied to Allied forces, particularly through the Lend-Lease program during World War II. Unlike the ribbed barrel version, this variant featured a smooth barrel, which simplified production and reduced weight. The smooth barrel version retained the iconic Cutts compensator, which was designed to reduce muzzle climb during automatic fire. This compensator, combined with the weapon’s relatively moderate rate of fire, made the 1928A1 easier to control in sustained bursts. The 1928A1 with a smooth barrel was often used by British and Commonwealth forces, among others, and became a symbol of the Allied war effort.
