Description
Quite possibly the most famous rifle fitted grenade launcher of all time, the American M203 has seen extensive global use since its introduction in 1969.
Its predecessor, the M79 (Blooper) was very reliable, however it was a stand alone weapon, so operators only had a sidearm/handgun to rely on for personal protection. The M203 was designed to be used in conjunction with a standard issue assault rifle, by attaching underneath the barrel. This allowed operators to alternate roles between that of a grenadier and rifleman with ease.
Although initially designed to attach to an M16, various mounts have been created to allow its integration with standard issue assault rifles of other nations, whether this be the Belgium FN FAL, British L1A1, French FAMAS or Austrian Steyr AUG, to name but a few.
The launcher is opened by simply pressing the side lever and sliding the barrel forward, the operator would then insert the 40mm cartridge, with the rearward/closing action of the barrel cocking the firing mechanism.
Although the M203 is currently being phased out by the U.S Armed Forces (replaced by the M320), it will no doubt continue to see global service for decades to come.
