Galil SAR

Description

Israel Military Industries (IMI) produced the Galil family of rifles after the Israeli’s faced the AK-47 during the Six-Day War.

In the late 1960’s Yisrael Galil and Yaacov Lior based their design on Valmet Rk 62, which is the Finnish variant of the standard Soviet AK. In fact many of the first Galil’s manufactured used Valmet Rk 62 receivers. Galil’s are produced in two calibres, either 5.56x45mm or 7.62x51mm NATO.

The Israeli army use three basic 5.56mm configurations. The Automatic Rifle Machine-gun (ARM) with a bi-pod, wire-cutter and carrying handle, the Automatic Rifle (AR) without the bi-pod etc. which is issued to support troops and this model, the Short Automatic Rifle (SAR), with a shortened barrel, is issued to special forces troops and vehicle crews.

A new version of the Galil is currently in production by Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) in multiple calibers and is called the Galil ACE.
