Description
The Vz. 58 is a Czechoslovakian-designed assault rifle that was introduced in 1958 and became the standard service rifle of the Czechoslovak Army. Despite its external similarities to the AK-47, the Vz. 58 is a completely different design with unique internal mechanisms. One of the distinctive features of some Vz. 58 models is the use of a chipboard stock.
The chipboard stock is a lightweight and cost-effective alternative to traditional wooden stocks. It is made from compressed wood particles bonded together with resin and finished with a protective coating. This material choice was part of the Czechoslovakian effort to reduce costs and simplify manufacturing while maintaining the durability required for military use. The chipboard stock on the Vz. 58 is known for its ruggedness and ability to withstand the rigors of military service.
The stock is attached to the rear of the receiver and provides a stable platform for shooting. It is typically finished with a wood-grain appearance, making it visually similar to traditional wooden stocks, though it is slightly lighter in weight. The chipboard stock also features a metal buttplate, which helps protect the stock from damage during use and provides a secure shoulder rest for the shooter.
